3 Simple Things To Use Less Plastic Today

For some, Sunday is a day to kick back and do a bit of chillin'. For others, it's just another day of work or running around getting things done.

For me, it's a bit of both. Out for a coffee with my wife. Being Dad's taxi for the kids. Inevitably ending up in one or two shops just picking things up. There's a 99% chance I am cooking tonight. (Good job I love cooking). Oh, and there's a bit of work squeezed in between that lot too. All fairly normal really (for us anyway).

The only real difference between this Sunday, and the same Sunday three years ago, is that this time I will not be leaving a trail of disposable and single-use plastics behind me.

Here's what i'm doing today, to use less plastic. Three things you can do too.

# 1 - Enjoy it.

At the coffee shop, we will either take the extra (special) time to sit in and drink from a REAL cup.

Or, if various important children related deadlines are looming we will take our own reusable mugs with us.

The first NO NO of the day is the disposable (plastic lined) option.

#2 - Just tote it

Now, there is very little chance that I will manage to avoid a supermarket at some point during the day.

So I turn to my trusty tote bag to get things home. It lives in my glove box and is always ready and waiting to lend a hand.

The second NO NO of the day is the dreaded disposable plastic bag option.

#3 - Get Loose

And while at the supermarket, wondering what to serve up for the family tonight, I head over to the fresh fruit and veg section and hand pick a selection of loose items.

(Luckily, my lot LOVE their veggies).

The third NO NO of the day is the pre-packed fruit and veg that has 10x more plastic than vitamin C.

And there it is. That's it.

Nothing mind blowing or earth shattering. Just a little extra thought as to the consequences of the actions I take.

I have not used 2 disposable coffee cups (4 if the kids insist on coming) . I have not used a plastic bag or three. And I have not thrown away several hundred grams of pointless overkill plastic packaging within 30 seconds of using it.

So, if you ever ask yourself "what can I, as one person, do to use less plastic ?", these are three simple options that you could consider.

Just start with one thing today and let your actions be your voice.
